All about railway sleepers
Railway Sleepers, the gardeners’ secret weapon!
The Industrial revolution may be over, and Britain may have lost its top place as a manufacturing nation, but the legacy lives on, in an unexpected recycling of thousands of railway sleepers on disused train tracks all over the nation. These amazingly well constructed pieces of wood have found a new home in gardens across the UK. That is not to say there are individuals pulling up railway tracks!! There are some very strict rules on acquiring railway sleepers, and there are specialist suppliers who have cheap railway sleepers for sale at very reasonable prices.
Uses of railway sleepers
So, how do you use a sleeper in your garden? The simplest way is to create raised beds with used railway sleepers; simply place them round the area you want the bed to be, fill up with garden soil, plant up and hey presto, an instant flowerbed! They also serve as somewhere for you to sit and admire the bed you have just created. It is a good idea to sit your sleepers on some gravel, and because they are wood, you can drill them to fit screws, long nails to hold them together which gives you extra rigidity and makes the bed twice as secure. Visit our Uses for railway sleepers page for more ideas for how to use these old railway sleepers.
Why use railway sleepers?
What makes sleepers so great in the garden? Well, think about it, they are designed to withstand a train going over them, to be outdoors in all weathers, not to warp or stretch, need I say more? These are a heavy duty, durable piece of garden landscaping and not only that, they look beautiful too! Made from different woods, depending on where they are sourced from, these are a natural material that blends well into the garden landscape. Oak railway sleepers have some lovely graining and knowing that you are using reclaimed railway sleepers adds a touch of Eco style to your garden!
Where can you buy cheap railway sleepers?
There are a number of online retailers of bargain railway sleepers, but be careful that you are getting the real thing. There are some sellers out there who are selling fake railway sleepers which will not be durable, will warp and crack and the money saved will soon be lost as you have to replace them. It is a good idea to ask from where the sleepers have come, as they all have a sort of “pedigree” and a background. I think it rather nice to know that your garden has railway sleepers from a track in Scotland or Wales; it gives them a sense of history. Another thing you should make sure of is that the supplier offers railway sleepers delivered to your door or better still right into your garden; they are heavy!! www.turfandstuff.com will deliver railway sleepers all over the UK. See page 4 for sources of railway sleepers.
Types of railway sleepers
Sleepers come from around the world so are made from different woods; treated or untreated, see page 3 for additional details on creosoted sleepers and properties of wood. Railway sleepers could be made from, softwood, oak, pine, tropical hardwood, or African Azobe hardwood, depending on where they are sourced, and they all have different properties. Some railway sleepers are brand new, made and never used; others are from a railway track missing a few reclaimed sleepers because Railtrack has sold them to gardening enthusiasts! Railway sleepers also come in different sizes and thicknesses not all railway lines are constructed in the same way, different gauge railway tracks need different sized sleepers. This may make a difference to what you use railway sleepers for in your garden, as some sizes are more suitable than others for raised beds, or garden steps or benches.

This is a fantastic post! Sleepers are so hard-wearing and versatile that they’re ideal for garden design and landscaping.
